St. Mary, Great Shefford
J.W. Walker, 1873 · Great Shefford, Berkshire, England
About
Great Shefford is a village in West Berkshire, about 20 miles south of Oxford. St. Mary's Church is largely a late Norman church and has a round tower — one of two in Berkshire.
The organ is a 1 manual instrument, built in 1873 by Joseph Walker and installed in the church in 1888. Not much history is known about this instrument, other than it having an overhaul in 1979 and an electric blowing supply replacing a previous hand pump. The tone quality of each stop is beautiful and it was very likely originally designed to accompany a small choir. The 'Keraulophon', 'Dulciana' and 'Wald Flute Treble' begin from Tenor C and the 'Stopped Diapason Bass' stop is used to complete the bottom octave.
All of the pipes other than the bottom half of the manual Open Diapason (which resides in the façade) and pedal Bourdon are enclosed. Originally it would have been controlled by a 'ratchet swell', however at some point this has been removed and replaced with a balanced swell pedal to the side, which was not functional at the time of recording.
